Back in 2013 I became Creative Director of BHT Design, a social enterprise design studio providing training opportunities for ex-service users set up as a sister company to BHT.

A significant commission was to redesign and build BHT a new website, a significant piece of work. As a typical organisational brochure website it had to fulfill many objectives; a detailed list of services, meaningful client involvement section, interactive jobs listings and a high-profile presence for fundraising campaigns.

The initial iteration was produced prior to the branding exercise; I used different colours for each section, skeumorphic design elements and greater use of imagery to break up the many competing elements. The site was well-received initially but I felt it was too busy and lacked focus. Clients also found it difficult to find a way to contact various agencies through the site.

Working with the Marketing and Fundraising team I produced a cleaner design and build as a part of the overall branding exercise. It was important to get this right as the site was to serve as an example for future branding and we couldn’t afford to be inconsistent at this early stage.

Another improvement was to make the new site responsive, and thereby accessible to a wider audience. In fact, a significant amount of development time was devoted to usability and accessibility, as this was not only good practice but something expressly requested by our clients and tenants.

Between 2013 and 2018 I also provided server hosting and administration as well as content management and training for various staff members.

Utilising a popup on the home page as opposed to a button link increased new signups for BHT's email newsletter by 700%.
BHT's Housing Services recently requested an alternate navigation system for their 'Are You a Tenant' section after feedback. The current branding and website structure was able to accommodate these additions.
As the second most visited page on the site, the Jobs section needed to be easy to navigate with a seamless user experience. The back end contains custom fields with built in instructions to ensure ease of use when posting new job opportunities.
